Our Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2017, following the noon Mass. Held in the shade of the main festival tent on parish grounds, this annual event allows us to get together with one another, relax, and enjoy each other’s company outside the demands of daily life, with good food and good friends in Christ.

This year’s event marks a return to the roots of the picnic, with pulled pork sandwiches provided, prepared and served by the Knights of Columbus Council 5253. Pizza will be provided by Marco’s Pizza and parishioners are asked to potluck side dishes (last names A-M) and desserts (last names N-Z). Cold soft drinks and beer remaining from the festival will be served.

When the event was originally founded in 1995 by Parish Council along with the parish festival under the pastorship of Rev. Daniel Ochs, the picnic served not only as an opportunity to gather in community as a parish but also as an opportunity to acknowledge and award outstanding members of the Knights of Columbus Council 5253. The function featured a full pig roast. In 2006, the event was moved from the Sunday immediately following the festival to a Sunday in September in an attempt to grow attendance. In 2007, St. Pius X Parish's 50th Anniversary, the picnic's location was changed to local Jefferson Park. However, an element of the community aspect was lost when the picnic was moved off-campus. In 2015, the picnic returned to the St. Pius X campus on the Sunday following the festival.

Assistant Business Manager and Knight John Beyer spoke about this year’s event. “We want to highlight the importance of the Parish Picnic again by bringing back some of its traditions and re-emphasizing its importance. Community-building is essential to our Catholic Faith and the picnic is an opportunity to do this. Knowing new parishioners, inviting new friends; this community-building is what we are here to do as believers, to build the Church and our Faith.”

Monsignor David Funk, Pastor of St. Pius X, echoed this sentiment in his hope to increase attendance at this year’s picnic on August 6. “The Parish Picnic is a time to socialize. It’s a time to celebrate our festival and reward all of the hard work that goes into it. It’s a time to celebrate another successful year as a parish family and to thank God for the many blessings He has given us. I hope to see many parishioners on August 6.”
